This is a bundle of 4 classes for a total of 4.0 contact hours. Upon successful completion of this course, attendees will learn how to evaluate and treat clients with neurogenic bowel and bladder as well as the fundamentals for intermittent catheterization. Objectives
- Identify the key structures that regulate the digestive system.
- Identify key differences between upper and lower motor neuron injuries as it relates to neurogenic bowel.
- Summarize steps to complete bowel program for both upper motor and lower motor neuron injuries.
- Identify 2 adaptive tools or assistive technology to increase independence with bowel program.
- Identify the key structures that regulate the process of micturition.
- Recognize the symptoms of overflow incontinence.
- Choose the appropriate treatment intervention for neurogenic bladder.
- Identify the three categories of urinary catheters and the appropriate use of each system.
- Compare and contrast open and closed system catheters for female patients.
- List two strategies to identify the urethra for accurate insertion of a catheter.
- Summarize the steps for both clean and sterile intermittent catheterization for the female patient.
- Identify two modifications or assistive technology to assist female patients with learning to complete self intermittent catheterization.
- Compare and contrast open and closed system catheters for male patients.
- Summarize the steps for intermittent catheterization using a coudé tip catheter.
- Summarize the steps for both clean and sterile intermittent catheterization for the male patient.
- Identify two modifications or assistive technology to assist male patients with decreased hand function learning to complete self intermittent catheterization.
